    Gig Harbor Tax Measures

Gig Harbor, WA October 8 — The Board of Directors of the Gig Harbor Chamber of Commerce has voted unanimously to oppose I-1631 which seeks to establish a new fee on carbon emissions. If passed, I-1631 could result in people paying more for gas if refineries pass on the fee to consumers instead of working to reduce carbon emissions. The Association of Washington Business is opposed to I-1631 as well.

Also unanimously voted upon by the board was support for I-1634, which prohibits additional taxation on groceries from local governments.  By supporting I-1634, counties, cities, and towns, as well as other municipal corporations and local taxing districts, would not be able to tax groceries at a higher rate.

Finally, the Gig Harbor Chamber board is in support of the Gig Harbor City Council’s sales-tax increase to pay for future street improvements. Sales-tax in Gig Harbor is one of the lowest around and increasing it just slightly will help improve transportation projects. The proposed sales-tax increase will appear on the November ballot.

The Chamber is dedicated to standing up for business and community interests to create and maintain economic opportunities. By opposing I-1631, and supporting I-1634 and the city sales-tax, the Gig Harbor Chamber of Commerce believes that Gig Harbor will continue to be a great place to live and work.
