Award winning Guided Tours begin June 8
Gig Harbor, WA – After a terrific debut last summer, The Gig Harbor Downtown Waterfront Alliance is proud to announce their award winning Waterfront Walking Tour will open its second season on June 8th. TheAlliancewas recently recognized with an Excellence on Main Award for the tour from the Washington State Main Street Program at RevitalizeWA in Chelan. With the addition of an exciting new tour this summer, the guided tour program will now be referred to as Waterfront Walking Tours.
“The new Wednesday tour is going to be the perfect addition for those with busy weekend schedules” said Lindsey Johnson, Executive Director of Harbor WildWatch and one of several tour guides. “Learn a bit about Gig Harbor’s history, sample our local distillery and finish off with dinner downtown!” The new From Skiffs to Spirits tour offers a guided evening stroll along the waterfront with an opportunity to learn about Gig Harbor’s past – from net sheds and the historic fishing fleet to the effects of prohibition in the harbor, yesterday and today. The tour, geared more for adults, ends with an optional tasting at Gig Harbor’s Heritage Distilling downtown. This free guided tour begins at 5:30 on Wednesday evenings June 8 – August 31, and meets at the Harbor History Museum. The tour lasts about one hour.
“Gig Harbor is a beautiful waterfront town filled with culture and a heritage that is intricately woven into our present” tour guide Rahna Lovrovich added. “There’s a little bit of something in our tours for everyone!” The original Harbor Heritage: Then and Now tour, will once again be offered on Saturday mornings. This family-friendly tour takes a 2 hour journey through Gig Harbor’s maritime and natural history. Learn about the harbor’s founding families, pioneering industries, and the wildlife and natural resources that brought us all together. Tour-goers will get a glimpse of what life was like in the early Harbor days and how activities from the past have influenced our present. The one way, 1.3 mile route hugs the waterfront beginning at the Maritime Pier and ending at the Bogue Viewing Platform in the Finholm District. Meet at the Maritime Pier at 10am on Saturday, June 11 – September 17, except for July 23 due to the Wine & Food Festival.
“Our tour guides are really special” said Josh Sherwin, Special Projects Coordinator for the Alliance, “each with a fun personality and a contagious enthusiasm about Gig Harbor’s history and wildlife.” Each tour has two guides, one of them a Wildlife expert from Harbor WildWatch. Each guide wears a headset microphone making them easy for all to hear.
Since both tours are one way, participants are encouraged to ride the Gig Harbor Trolley to get them back near the starting point, or to walk back and enjoy shopping or dining along the waterfront. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended. The tours are free to the public and presented by the Gig Harbor Downtown Waterfront Alliance in partnership with Harbor WildWatch and the Harbor History Museum.
