Plenty of local “Gigs” at the 2016 Gig
This year’s Maritime Gig Festival entertainment schedule features something for everyone, with a heavy emphasis on outstanding musical performances from our talented local community. Headline entertainment is sure to rock your Maritime boat with performances from three Gig Harbor based bands, the country rockers Five $ Fine, the popular Beatle’s band The Fab Three, and of course, the legendary Shy Boys. Performances from the Harbor Winds Concert Band, Harbor Voice, Harbor Dance, Peninsula Youth Orchestra, Discovery Elementary Choir & Rock Band, Swing Fever, Kopachuck Middle School Jazz Band, Carina Lia and the Pop Star Kids round out the local contingent. The Maritime Gig Festival takes place on Saturday and Sunday, June 4 & 5. All performances are free and take place at Skansie Brothers Park.
Saturday night’s featured headliner is a hard drivin', horn oriented, dance/show band from the Seattle area, Big Dog Revue. Performing at 7pm, all seven members of the band are Seattle area natives with a combined experience of over 200 years. They've performed in several groups, including: The Temptations, Dr. Funk, Dix Delux, Sparky & the Starfires, Merrilee Rush, Page Boys, Barney Armstrong Revue, Jerry Andal and the Roughriders, Stampede Pass and Charlie & The Tunas. The “dogs” will amaze you with their repertoire of your favorite old school party tunes. Be sure to wear your dancin’ shoes!
The Gig is thrilled to welcome Seattle’s contemporary jazz guitarist Michael Powers to Gig Harbor on Saturday afternoon at 3:15. The Tacoma News Tribune says "Michael Powers has established himself among a new breed of guitarists and composers who, with each album and every performance, continually redefines the guitars' role in the jazz context. His technique is stunning, but he never employs it at the expense of the musicality of the melodic line. Blues has always been at the core of Michael's inspiration and expression.” Michael’s custom-made guitar is set up to play through a synthesizer, which allows him to replicate sounds as varied as harmonica, saxophone, trumpet, steel drums and percussion.
Gig Harbor's legendary Shy Boys will take the stage Sunday afternoon at 3:30, providing a fun, energetic finale to the Maritime Gig weekend. The Shy Boys play acoustic rock from the 70's and 80's with extraordinary energy, and have been voted South Sound Magazine's best band and Evening Magazine's Top 10 Best of Western Washington for three years in a row. 2016 will mark the Shy Boys' sixth appearance at the Maritime Gig Festival!
The young at heart will enjoy a return engagement from Roberto the Magnificent on Saturday afternoon at 4:45. Captivating audiences for more than two decades, he is recognized as one of the nation's most unique variety acts performing throughout the USA. He learned to juggle and unicycle at age 11, within four years he was awarded a silver medal at the World Juggling Championships. Since then he has accumulated more than two decades of experience performing for live audiences. Roberto the Magnificent is one of the most in-demand solo entertainers featured as halftime entertainment for professional and semi-pro sporting events! Be sure to bring the whole family.
New at the Gig this year will be the “Gig Kids” entertainment stage located at the intersection of Harborview and Pioneer. On Saturday afternoon, expect youth oriented performances featuring Gig Harbor’s fabulous Pop Star Kids, gymnasts, martial arts demonstrations, baton twirlers and more.
The Maritime Gig Festival is a special, two-day event presented on the first weekend of June by the Gig Harbor Chamber of Commerce each year. For a complete listing of events and times for both days, be sure to visit www.maritimegig.com or find us on Facebook.
