The Gig Harbor Chamber is shaking things up this year.

The Maritime Gig Festival is back, promising beloved family traditions and new business opportunities and things to do, making the annual community event a much anticipated summer season kickoff.

What draws thousands of people to the area’s largest annual summer festival and is named after a small boat that holds only a handful of rowers? The upcoming Maritime Gig Festival, of course, soon to tie up again in Gig Harbor through the weekend of June 4-5.

One of the things making the “Gig Fest” a great time year after year is that it combines beloved family traditions—including a genuine small town parade, with new business opportunities and fun things for Gig Fest-goers to see and do. So it never gets old.

The expanded footprint up Pioneer Way to Tarabochia Street running west of Harbor General Store, was a huge success last year. The extra space made room for up to 20 craft and non-profit booths and allowed the Chamber to offer special rates for those vendors.

New this year will be a fun and entertaining Maritime Gig Kids performance area in the intersection of Harborview and Pioneer.  As the name implies, a variety of children’s groups from all over Gig Harbor will perform.  You can expect to see performances from singing to dancing even cheer and karate. Also, making its debut during the Gig Fest is a sustainable and contemporary ‘Tiny Home’ from Brett Marlo Design and Build.

But wait, there’s more. The car show, a new hit in recent years features new and classic vehicles, and a way cool 1959 vintage John Deere 530 tractor that you have to see to believe. And who can forget the amazing view of anchored boats in the harbor on Sunday?  The Blessing of the Fleet, one of Gig Harbor’s long standing tradition, also takes place on Sunday.

So, boys and girls, men and women, and all you Gig Fest-going families: get ready for a heck of a good time!

If you are interested in participating in the festival through a booth, the parade, or by volunteering to help make this event possible visit www.maritimegig.com or call the Chamber office at 253-851-6865.

On Monday, April 25, 2016 at 5:00pm the Gig Harbor City Council will hold an Open House to preview the ideas for improving the Jerisich Dock and the Maritime Pier in Gig Harbor followed by the City Council Meeting at 5:30pm.

The City Council Meeting to follow will include a vote of the Council to Approve or Disapprove the Grant Application the City will use to fund these much needed Recreational Improvements.  This is a very important vote that will allow people wanting to enjoy Gig Harbor's beautiful waterfront amenities, greater access to our waters and shore attractions.

We need the Chamber Board and Chamber Members to be active participants in this process.  Please join us at the City Council Meeting at (5:00pm for the Open House) 5:30pm, Monday April 25, 2016.  Show up early to get a great seat.  You are welcome to verbally give your position to the City Council by providing your thoughts prior to voting.
